The friend zone: Adventure racing made for two

It can be daunting to try something different, particularly when it sounds as hardcore as adventure racing. But what if you could do it with your best mate or sister? How much fun would that be?

The Wild Women Adventure Race, held on 19 th October in Queensland, specialises in two-women teams and caters for all ages and levels of experience. The competition includes paddling, mountain biking, trail running and navigating around the spectacular Noosa hinterland. Most of the equipment is either supplied or can be hired, so is perfect for novice entrants.

The competition started in 2012 as Australia’s first ever all-female event of its kind and is purposefully designed to encourage women to get out of the house, office and gym, and experience the thrill of being outdoors. All that is really needed to participate is a basic level of fitness, a female friend and a willingness to have a great time with a bunch of like-minded women.

Tackling such an event as a pair can be a great way to learn the ropes and takes the pressure off having to do it all by yourself. You can train together, play to your strengths, and challenge each other to learn new skills.

The race itself includes between 20 to 30km of mountain biking, 8 to 10km of trail running/trekking, 1 to 3km of kayaking/paddling and basic navigation. Depending on the day, there may be multiple legs of each discipline and you can either bring your own mountain bike or hire one. All the paddling gear is provided.

Making sure you are safe and comfortable, particularly when you are doing something for the first time, is crucial and so event organisers have developed a detailed mandatory equipment list to ensure you don’t need to worry about what to take. They also offer skills clinics and training options to help those with less experience become race ready.

Given the stunning backdrop for the race, organisers are serious about protecting the environment. With the support of Plastic Free Noosa and Tourism Noosa, the team are working hard to achieve zero waste to landfill. As part of this commitment, the event will be audited and the total waste measured and categorised. If they can reach their target of zero waste to landfill it will be the first time it has ever been achieved in Noosa.

A unique feature of this event are the race categories, which offer options suitable for everyone. Totally Wild Women caters for two women, of any age who are totally ready from some outdoor adventure. Wild Mums encourages two ‘mums’ who may not be aware they have super endurance powers, to sign up and use their special mum strengths out in the wild. Wild Fillies is all about two women, with a combined age under 50 years, who are ready to giddy up and go wild. The Wise & Wild category invites two women, with a combined age of 100 years or over, who may think they’re too old for this, but whose wisdom will surprise them in the wild. And finally, Wild Sisters offers two sisters the chance to experience some wild adventure together.

So…what are you waiting for? It’s never too late to try something new, exciting and different! Go on. Grab a female friend and be adventurous!
